Technically, this movie is great. There is/are great action sequences, amusing comedic sequences, super cameos, good editing, good cinematography, and all the other attributes that are the hallmarks ofr a well-made quality film. I was very entertained and did not fall asleep in the theatre this time.

There is only one problem. THIS IS A STUPID ADAPTATION THAT IS MAKING JULES VERNE TURN OVER IN HIS GRAVE! Jules Verne wasn't writing about Kung Fu! And hey!, why didn't Jackie Chan get the girl? Whats wrong with the Chinese guy getting the girl anyway?

This can only be Disney at work. You don't need to see the Disney logo at the start of the film to perceive the smell and taste of Disney. I just can't put my finger on what this "smell" is but I think it has to do with COMPLETELY TRASHING A GREAT WORK BY A VISIONARY NOVELIST and then, ROLLING THE ENTIRE STORY IN THICK STICKY SACCHARINE SO THAT EVERY LIVING BEING IN THIS SOLAR SYSTEM, AND THE SURROUNDING TEN SOLAR SYSTEMS, WILL LIKE THE MOVIE, and therefore pay to go see it.

Please, for the love of mike, no more of this. 8 for technical quality, 9 for comedy, -3 for adaptation, 6 for keeping me awake in the theatre.
Perhaps, I was too snooty when I saw this the first time. I was in that era when I was starting to take film study seriously. On first viewing, I was turned off by all the low-brow jokes and felt the oncoming creep of a movie calendar built around blockbusters at the expense of story. I similarly felt angry that another film that year, Troy, watered down the mythology so that we wouldn't be distracted from the main draw of watching Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, and Brad Pitt while shirtless. Similarly, I originally thought "How Dare They Shortchange Jules Vernes' story! This is a blatant attempt to showcase this B-level actor's martial arts." How silly I was to think of Jackie Chan's martial arts as something of a sideshow. I still feel like Jackie Chan could up his game as an actor during the scenes where he's not fighting, but the elaborate staging and acrobatics is fully realized art.

The film is kid-friendly and an adult will need to see it on those terms to fully enjoy the film. If you can do that, you'll find the film to be a little exaggerated in its acting, but ultimately sweet, adventurous and a decent homage to the original (with the addition of more karate kicks).
Sails along on a slipstream of pleasant scenery, amusing incident and the boundless charms of its appealing leading men, Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan: It's an unexpectedly buoyant spectacular.
No. For the most part this is a film that draws loose inspiration from the Verne novel. A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.

To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:

-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.

-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.

-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and serves as motivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fog as an excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.

-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicted as a dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.

-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist.
